Why a Jet Ski Won't Start After Flipping
When a PWC rolls over, water enters places it absolutely should not be:
- The air intake and airbox — water gets pulled toward the engine the moment the ski inverts
- The exhaust system — water travels back up through the exhaust outlet and sits in the manifold
- The engine compartment — the bilge fills and water splashes onto electrical components and ignition parts
- The carburetor or throttle body — on older 2-stroke machines especially, water finds its way in fast
The engine won't start because it's either flooded with water in the cylinders, has soaked electrical connections that won't fire, or — worst case — has hydrolocked, meaning water in the cylinders is physically preventing the pistons from moving.

Step 1: Right It in the Correct Direction — This Matters
Most manufacturers specify a rollover direction. Get it wrong and you dump more water into the engine.
- Sea-Doo: Roll counter-clockwise when viewed from behind the ski
- Yamaha WaveRunner: Most models roll left (port) side up first — check the hull sticker
- Kawasaki: Roll toward the exhaust side, typically the left/port side

Step 5: Check the Engine Bay and Electrical Connections
With the hood open, look at the bilge area around the engine. Standing water near the engine block needs to be cleared — use a rag, a bilge pump, or give the automatic pump time to work before you crank.
Next, check your spark plug boots and electrical connectors. A wet ignition connector is one of the most common reasons a jet ski won't start after flipping even when the engine itself is fine. Wipe everything you can reach and give any wet connectors a firm wipe-and-shake before proceeding.
Step 6: Pull the Spark Plugs If There's Any Doubt
If the ski was inverted for more than a few seconds, or if it took on significant water before you righted it, pull your spark plugs before attempting to start. This step alone can save your engine.
With the plugs out:
- Crank the engine for 2–3 seconds using the start button
- Watch the plug holes — water will spray or seep out if it's in the cylinders

- If the engine fires but sounds rough or ragged, let it idle — it's burning off residual water in the exhaust
