A tongue jack does two jobs: it makes hitching a one-person operation, and it keeps the trailer level and off the ground in storage. Swivel jacks fold up out of the way for towing, which matters on low-clearance ramps where a fixed jack will drag.
Match the jack to your tongue weight with margin — running a jack at the top of its rating is how the gearing strips. Grease the screw mechanism at least annually. Trailer jacks live in the same salt spray and road grit as everything else on the trailer, and a seized jack that will not lower is a bad discovery at a busy ramp.
