Traction is a safety item as much as a comfort one. Original mats go slick with age and UV exposure, and a slick foot area on a stand-up or a hard-cornering runabout is how people come off the ski. Fresh traction also lets you brace properly, which cuts fatigue noticeably on a long day.

Surface preparation is what determines whether a new mat stays down. Remove all old adhesive, clean thoroughly with a solvent that leaves no residue, and install in warm conditions. Roll the mat down firmly and give the adhesive a full day to cure before riding. Most traction mat failures are prep failures, not product failures.
