Carbon Rings

The carbon ring is the seal where the driveshaft passes through the hull into the pump. It is a consumable, it is cheap, and when it fails you get water in the bilge — often the first sign is a bilge pump running more than it used to, or a wet hull after a normal ride.

Carbon seals fail for predictable reasons: a dry start that runs the face without lubrication, driveshaft misalignment from worn motor mounts, or simple age and heat cycling. If you are replacing a carbon ring for the second time in as many seasons, the ring is not your problem — check motor mount condition and driveshaft alignment before you put another one in.

Replace the ring any time the pump comes off for other work. It costs very little and saves a second teardown.
