Kawasaki 650 SX Top-End Rebuild: The Parts You Need

The Kawasaki 650 SX is one of the classic stand-ups making a big comeback, and a top-end rebuild is the most common way to bring a tired one back to life. If your 650 is down on compression, hard to start, or smoking, a fresh top end usually fixes it. Here is exactly what you need.

The core parts

Piston kit. This is the heart of the job. A complete kit includes the piston, rings, wrist pin bearing, and clips. Pistons come in standard and oversizes (0.25mm, 0.50mm, 0.75mm, 1.00mm) — which one you need depends on your cylinder, more on that below.

Top-end gasket set. You need fresh head and base gaskets so everything seals back up. Don't reuse old gaskets. Browse Gaskets & Seals.

Spark plug. Always finish a rebuild with a fresh plug.

The one thing to check before you order

Measure your cylinder bore before buying a piston. If the cylinder is within spec and not scored, a standard piston works. If it's worn or scored, it will need to be bored or replated to the next oversize — and then you order the matching oversize piston. Ordering the piston before measuring is the most common mistake. If you're not sure, take the cylinder to a shop to be measured.

While you're in there

It's smart to inspect the wrist pin bearing, check the cylinder for scoring, and look at your reeds. Knocking these out during the same teardown saves you a second job later.
